Nikon Series E Lens Question

Recently I bought a Nikon FE and E series 50 1.8 lens on ebay. After playing around with the camera, I noticed the aperture blades do not move when I adjust the aperture ring on the lens. I’m wondering if this is normal operation? I’ve read online that some lenses do not drop the blades until the shutter is released.
