Still felt pain during tooth extraction after 2 local anesthetic injections
I went in to get a tooth removed today at my dentist’s office- I had gone in to get to removed originally last Thursday but became intensely emotional and severely anxious after consent forms had been signed and numbing injections done so much so that I needed to leave and come back another day. Well I was feeling great today, a wee bit of anxiety but not anything like on Thursday.
After first injection I still have sensation so I’m given a second one. Dentist goes to remove and I feel INTENSE pain, they kept reminding me pressure is normal but that was not pressure at all. He threw down his tools and said “I think we need sedation with this one” and leaves the room. I start to feel pain in half of my upper teeth and the tooth he worked on is stinging like crazy.
He comes back later and explains he didn’t pull at all, simply “placed instrument between tooth and gum and wiggled to see if there was still an sensation”. Explained that my anxiety is causing my brain to register the pressure as pain and he’s referring me to an oral surgeon.
It is true I have significant anxiety when it comes to dental work and getting a tooth pulled is literally one of my worst nightmares. But is it true that the pain was really all just in my head?? Can anxiety and fear really be stronger then medicine? Is this common???
