AC Troubleshoot - 08 CRV doesn't blow cold air unless car is moving - cause?
Hello, I live in Phoenix and AC is essential. It has been working fine blowing cold air consistently when driving but I realized that when I stopped at a red light (or worse when stuck in gridlock on the freeway) it was not blowing cold air (or it wasn't as cold as it was when I was moving).
Is it common for AC units of 2008 model cars to not blow cold air when stopped at a stop light and only blow the cold when moving?
Otherwise when moving the vast majority of the time the AC was just fine and no issues. I was fine driving it like this and figured it was natural that maybe they only blow cold air when moving. Regardless I did not want to take it in since there wasn't a real problem but I decided it couldn't hurt to check anyways.
I took it to a shop and they said it was my drivers side cooling fan assembly. They replaced it and recharged the freon and made sure the system was filled.
Unfortunately when I left it pretty much worked the same. I wasn't idling much so I couldn't see the effects but when getting stuck in traffic it was obviously not blowing cold air.
It was very frustrating because I stated the problem directly and they said they found the problem and fixed it and charged me $723 to replace the cooling fan (which the part seemed like it was very cheap to buy so it seemed like a lot of labor cost just to get to the relatively inexpensive part). And after this essentially it was the same as before I took the car in. They also gave me a huge list of other things to get repaired when were not necessary (I regularly have my car serviced by a mechanic I trust and he has always kept up on all of these services and not mentioned any of the things they said was required). This just kind of put a bad taste in my mount.
I was driving to Cali from Az in 115 degree weather and the AC was fine until we hit bumper to bumper traffic in the middle of the desert. Then I realized when not moving the air was not cold anymore. Even worse the car was starting to overheat so I had to kill the AC altogether. It was a pretty miserable drive for a while due to a freak accident but it makes me want to find out more about the AC issue. The car never has come close to overheating before this one time but I'm also never bumper to bumper in 115 degree deserts either. Doing the drive without the random gridlock the AC has performed just fine on all other trips (constantly moving though and not stopped).
Anyways any thoughts on what might be the issue. I had my mechanic check the rest of the car and all is fine. He does not do AC so he wasn't sure. He suggested it might be one of the fans. It's frustrating that if they replaced one fan and the majority of the cost was labor to get to it, the other fan should have been replaced at the time as well but was not.
Or maybe it is common that 2008 model AC units only blow the cold air when moving and not when stopped?
