How to find students genuinely in need of financial support for higher education?

Hello Indians, I need your help.

For a few years now I've been wanting to financially help an under privileged student, who is bright and has the desire to study and finish a degree. I feel very happy to have a part in someone's education.

For example, if the student is pursuing engineering, I can manage 2Lacs per year. If I earn more, I'll start helping more.

The problem is I don't know how to find people who are genuinely in need. I don't want to donate to NGOs where I can't verify if my money actually reaches the student and it is my wish that the student receives every single rupee I donate.

I am thinking to approach Principals of few colleges in my city and ask them if they have a student struggling financially. Do you think this is a good idea? If not, do you have better suggestions?
