Why is it recommended we use an exercise ball before delivery?

I have no idea why is it supposed to be so helpful and it has always peaked my curiosity. I lended mine to a friend but never asked what exactly it is needed for…Now that I am pregnant I figured it was about time to find out and maybe put it to use.
