Thoughts on Gypsy…

Went into it with high hopes. Sad to say expectations were cut short. I don’t think Audra’s soprano is right for the role. It’s too beat, too perfect, too pretty. There were moments when she used more nasal tonality. But Rose is a character, and her operatic soprano didn’t inhabit that, in my opinion. The acting was phenomenal though.

One complaint I haven’t seen on here yet though, which was my biggest frustration actually: the orchestra. I don’t know whether it was because we were sitting in the back of the Mez. But they were incredibly quiet, especially up against the actors’ voices. I also don’t know whether they had enough trumpets. Because the orchestrations for this show are supposed to be big and brassy, a classic Big Band situation. I didn’t get any of that. The trumpet was hidden throughout most of its most glorious parts, such as the Overture solo. Major, major disappointment.
