Am I the only one enjoying The Tomb?
Let’s get the obvious out of the way.
The map is a buggy mess. I’ve seen streamers unable to get pass certain steps, the game crashing and freezing, and the usual BO6 bugs that have persisted since day 1. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
The ice staff is very randomly just reused, which I think is lazy and doesn’t make sense. But at the same time, it does feel great to use once upgraded. (Pre-upgraded is practically useless).
The Easter egg itself isn’t the greatest either. The upgrade step for the ice staff is awful if that’s how it’s intended, the lack of an intro cutscene and the rather poor ending cutscene that made the crew feel lifeless also don’t help much, but there’s some good things in this map in my opinion.
The gameplay is good (beside amalgams). The map layout I see a lot of people complaining about it because it’s small but I just feel that’s forced? A map can be small and good, there’s so many examples of that in the past I don’t see why it’s relevant now.
The side Easter eggs are some of the best just from what’s been discovered so far. The golden armour is a challenge but a rewarding one, reminding me of alpha omega round 200 in a way. The free pap one is good, the ray gun one also good although a bit RNG dependent on dig piles, the free aether tool and perk side Easter eggs are all a step up from citadel in my opinion. Even the jumpscare is quite a good one that actually got me.
The map is beautiful. It’s one of their best to date, with the spawn reminding me of Shang, the insides of the tomb reminding me of IX or Ancient Evil, and the dark aether reminding me of Revelations.
I think the Easter egg does have some good parts as well as bad parts as previously mentioned. I enjoy the Roman numeral step although rather easy. The defending the ice staff is actually a challenge, and so is the enemy specific lockdowns. They all have a decent twist on them, like seeing an army of vermin was rather funny. It has it’s inconsistencies for sure but not bad.
The last thing I’ll talk about is the boss. I actually enjoy it, and I believe that will be an unpopular opinion. It’s a DPS check which admittedly is an oversight from Treyarch as it literally can be impossible, but it gives a sense to grind for that fully maxed loadout like in the older games. It gets progressively harder which is a good feature from Voyage’s bossfight and so on. It’s got good mechanics, and the ice staff makes short work of the mobs, making it shine and feel amazing. For sure not their best, but not bad. And the final phase with the ticking time bomb is rather thrilling to me.
I don’t fully understand the hate for the map. I think it’s good. But what I do understand and feel the same on is the state it’s been released in. It’s a buggy mess, and it’s been let down by the lack of polish, again.
I would love to hear opinions. I don’t want to be argumentative, just to see where people agree and disagree with me.
