Recommend me a car: quiet, reliable, economical, small-ish

I'm in the market for a used car. Will be mostly used for weekends away surfing, occasionally camping. Don't need a heap of space; a hatch would probably suffice, though something like a Honda Jazz looks pretty nice for the internal space options. Since I'll be doing a lot of freeway driving, something that's quiet and relatively comfortable on the open road would be nice. Looking around the $10k mark.
