Moving to another state

Hello! In March, we’ll be moving from central California up to Portland. We’ll likely be making 1-2 trips moving our stuff up there but I’m really not sure how to go about transferring our cats since it’s such a long drive. By March, Pico de Gato and Bug (brothers, very bonded) will be 2 years old. How do they go potty and all that? Are motels generally ok with cats? I fully intend on giving them gabapentin and using feliway and all that but I just want to make this as least traumatic as humanly possible. I’ve even considered maybe boarding them in our current town when we begin the moving stuff then flying down to get them and flying them back up so they’re not in carriers for so long but it would be a lot of money to do this. I just wonder how other people have managed moving long distances with their cats.
