Gym community -> Bully club
As someone who has been actively involved in fitness for the past 5 years, it's very disheartening to see the gym community turning into a ragging platform for people trying to get in shape. I'm not talking about bigger franchises like Slam and Brigade, because I haven't gone there yet, but the local smaller gyms. I was trained by an anna (not a gym trainer. Just a member like me) when I first started. Him and his buddies taught me almost everything and they were with me throughout my transformation journey in my first year, when they had no reason to do it. That's how the community was 5 years ago. Pure encouragement and motivation for the rookies. In the past 2 years, I've changed around 5 gyms all because of one reason - I didn't like people (especially the trainers and managers themselves) mocking other people who trying to get in shape, behind their backs. Statements like "Malamaadu edhuku gym varudhu ney therla", "Elumbu mattum than Iruku odambu la, Ivan lam en gym varan", "ponnunga vandha nalla irukum, inga indha nonjankal ah ye paathu mudila" have become very common across all the gyms I've been to. These are actual statements I've heard "trainers" say.
I've tried talking to them, requesting them to stop passing those comments and it didn't seem like it was about to stop anytime soon. I'm planning to take it up a notch and enroll myself into Slam from Feb 10th. Hopefully people there mind their own business.
If you're someone hitting the gym, and you've been passing comments like this, please stop it from today. It's not cool. Everyone are fighting different battles. People have different bodies, genetics and conditions. And they are trying to better themselves by getting off their couch. That itself deserves praise. Do not put down other people to feed your own insecurity. If someone's form is bad, please help them correct it and if not, atleast do not comment.
