Can you still believe in God while having doubts?

I'm having trouble understanding how God is good but stills gives us free will, the bible says that in heaven we will not have desire to sin, why didn't he just give us that in the beginning? Why wouldn't he protect us from bad? Saying free will is good would be like allowing someone to kill themselves. Why not just protect us?
