Keeping pets away and safe during cooking process

Hopefully this isn't too unrelated but does anyone have suggestions on how to manage pets during the cooking process? For example, when I'm cutting things and need to step away, I'd love an easy way to cover the entire with something that can deter my cat. I'm also going to start cooking with a single burner, and I would like to cover the entire burner as well. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance
