I would love some suggestions: Succession wars and magic-fuelled states

Hi, So I'm about to start a new campaign that starts in a magiocratic country; the most powerful mage rules the land. The previous sorcerer-queen has died and now the noble houses fight for who to replace her.

The campaign has the players start out supporting a potential contender for the magi-throne. They have gathered behind a warm and charismatic low-born with a powerful sorcerer bloodline. They are motivated by the prospect of change from the currently noble-centric and centralized system and give more power and aid to the outer regions of the country.

This introduces magic tournaments, intrigue, diplomacy with various factions as important elements beyond the classic dungeon delving. I'm curious if there are people here that have experience with running/writing magiocracies and have suggestions for planning and running intrigue games and succession wars.

I really appreciate any suggestions and hope you all have a wonderful day.
