What did Athena expect Ody to do?

In "Remember them" she tells him to finish Polyphemus off. But like wtf was he supposed to do? From what i gather Poly is a bigass cyclops that treats a couple dozen men stabbing his feet like ants. How was Ody supposed to do anything more after blinding him?
