I enjoy perverts, but wont forever
Tldr: i enjoy perverts but i dont find ill be able to explore it the same way i did with previous works. Read if your interested in listening to a rant :)
I got into ethel cain following the release of preachers daughter, and I havent put it down in the past three years since. Not a day has gone by where i havent checked into her ever changing developments in lore, found new ways to connect to its vulnerable lyrical content. I listened to preachers daughter back to back the first time through, and very often since then. Following my descent into fan status, I was ecstatic to hear we would be hearing never heard before works from the album within the next few months. This work never came, but i found solace in old unreleased tracks which i got access to via old tumblr posts and lanaboards chatrooms. Shortly after this she issued a post stating that she no longer gave fans her consent to explore such works, and they began dropping off of the face of the internet. Hastilly, i compiled what i could into a google drive folder, and waited patiently for the release of one of the many tracks she had promised on her soon coming project. I continued to explore what works i could get my hands on, awaiting new releases. She dropped off of the face of the planet, and We recieved one single and one live performance (in addition to her unprivating a few unreleased tracks on her white silas and ethel sounclouds and posting obscure pop singles to tommy, and an experimental album to her ashmedia account) in the few years that she remained missing for. Throughout those years i listened to every obscure track i could access, in addition to listening to the album in its entirety more times than i can recall. Each time i heard a new tone hidden in the layers of noise remixed and hidden in different ways for a number of years before the works release, explored the storytelling from a new perspective. In april of last year, a 20 second clip of a new work was released, and i was stoked. Alongside it a full live performance of the song coming a few months later, a song called punish being leaked via performance, and dust bowl or a betty davis cover being relentlessly teased. A tumblr account with her username popped up again and began teasing cryptic lyrics and an upcoming project. An account called vacillator posted poems and cryptic drawings, and a few conceptual youtube videos had everyone in a frenzy. Suddenly, a release date and track list hit the press when i started to lose interest, the album wouldnt be similar or connected to the work i fell in love with, more ambient. The tumblr accounts turned into its happening to everbody spam bots, coupled with a few nasty pictures of violence and random selfies being sporadically pushed out. I stopped checking the accounts following this. Punish was released soon after, and i loved the song and its strange colonial imagery. The loud noise punctuated the prominent vocals, i thought the album was headed in this direction and i was happy with that. There was another gap in any news, aside from news chronicling a long awaited but severly limited vinyl release, one which masses of folks had expressed interest in mind you. As weeks went by, january eighth approached faster than expected since i had stopped steadfastly waiting for it. Perverts released on january 7 in my time zone, and i was prepared to experience its rich atmosphere at once once again. I pressed play, perverts (the track) opened with zombie esque voices, distorted schoolbells. Endless talk of masturbation and heaven droning in monotone followed, and growling flushes of air continued in the background. No beautiful, melodic vocals (which were once a signature of her works) were present, there was no lyrical wealth to explore, just repetitive chanting, and no gorgeous complexity in mixing set ambience, created worlds punctuated by hidden birds, frogs, characters voices, slapstick elements, and screams, something that defined the work she released prior. I listened to the album in full in a church to protect myself from it, and heard as vaccuums ran rampant and sporadic whispers of beauty punctuated perhaps three tracks on the album. One beautiful instrumental was released, and two spoken word tracks were worth the unecesarrily long listening times. Overall the album was okay, but it was not worth a three years wait. Perhaps ill play vacillator, ettiene, punish, amber waves, and onanist once more, however ill adamantly avoid most others as they were long and scary. This work is something that wont hold my interest for more than a year at most. I hope b sides is released soon, and that it resonates with the works which she teased for years through consistent referencing of dust bowl and the single which she teased this work with. I hope homecoming and all the other tracks were waiting for dont get terrifying reworks, and that the droning doesnt infect preachers wife or mother of a preacher, or the book, or the several movies she promised, of the b sides, if theyll ever come at all.
Please dont attack me, this is just my experience as a steadfast fan of haydens since her foiree into the mainstream. I hope someone resonates with this.
