Rebirth lazy writing, lazy storytelling?
Now don't get me wrong. I love the game and have been a huge fan since I was 12 years old, back in 1997. I enjoyed Rebirth and have played nearly 100% of the game, but to me, the writing and story telling seem very lazy, and I'm wondering if they even know where the story is going.
I know I might get loads of downvotes for this, but I'm hoping I'm not the only one.
The biggest groans in games and movies are "it was just a dream" or when somebody returns from the dead, "you killed the clone/data version." The newest trend since lost seems to be "alternate timelines," which seems accepted nowadays....
At the end of intermission, we see Zack building up the courage to go into the church to see Aerith. This is what I mean by "is the story being made up as it goes along": Was this scene retconned or just the lazy "It was an alternate universe; we don't really know what to do with this scene, so forget it happened."
In the first half of Rebirth, there is a lot of hinting that Tifa is not Tifa and could be Jenova, only for the second half of the game to never mention it again apart from a throwaway line near the end from Tifa. "Cloud, tell me when you're not feeling okay, like thinking I'm somebody I'm not." That's almost like saying, "Forget everything Sephiroth was saying; you were just being crazy."
I hope I'm wrong, but I feel the new story is being made up as it goes along. It doesn't have a beginning, a middle, or an end." It had a beginning; we've made up the middle as we go along. We have no idea of the ending, but we've created alternative timelines, so we've got a choice of what we end with. We might retcon more stuff, but everyone will accept that it's another timeline.
Like I said, I hope I'm wrong, but I think there's going to be a lot of retconning and plot holes not being answered in the final game....
