Imagine being a fatui soldier in Natlan
You arrive to Natlan, with Captain: the first of harbingers. You take pride in serving under his command. Many of your fatui friends envy you, and you don't take your position for granted.
As you arrive, Captain takes two of his most trusted soldiers and goes direcrly to the stadium to fight pyro archon for the gnosis. An unsuccessful battle but, you don't let it discourage you: it's not the end. Captain is alive and Mavuika was weakened. Your Captain refuses to take advantage of a weakened warrior, so you are stationed to wait.
As you wait, abyssal power grows. Several times you engage the monsters to save civilian tribals. They thank you, but you don't take credit for it. Nevertheless, you feel proud, almost heroic. Several times the people you saved invite you to their homes to treat you to dinner and bed, but you politely refuse. And in time, despite being from Snezhnaya, you find yourself feeling comfortable in Natlan.
The situation develops further and, after some time, Captain issuses a new order: to work together with Natlan to stop abyss. From what rumors you gather, one of Captain's plans failed and he puts his faith into Mavuika to solve the crisis, for now, anyway. Many of course, believe your Captain has other ideas and its a temporary alliance. Hell, he even asks Tsaritsa to relief him off the duty to capture the pyro gnosis, which she agrees to.
Of course, this doesn't concern you. You are only a fatui soldier. You fight for Captain and that never changed. You follow orders.
And your next order is to be placed directly under Mavuika's command.
... You feel insulted. Were it any other harbinger you could think about deserting, coming back to Snezhnaya and living somewhere far, somewhere where you wouldn't be found to be court martialed. But this is Captain. Your Captain. You can only obey his order.
Over the next few days, the situation becomes more and more severe. One by one your comrades fall, defending the Natlan people from the overwhelming power of the abyss and its creations. You fight till the very end. There is no distinction anymore, between you and natlan warriors. All of you fight together to stop something far more dangerous than anything you have ever seen. Seeing the destruction the abyss causes, the sacrifices of your allies, you realise it must be stopped here, before it can reach your homeland.
Eventually, Mavuika stops the invasion. All is good, and you participate in rebuilding the nation and hunting the remaining abyssal entities. Despite all odds, you survived. Maybe you became stronger than the rest. Maybe you just got lucky. It won't return your comrades's lives though.
Later on, you hear the news: it's over. Mavuika won. The abyss is stopped. Your remaining friends cheer and drink what little fire water you have had remaining, mourning the loss of those who didn't make it.
The next day you come to the stadium and observe. Its a total shitshow. The people celebrating the end of the war, cheers and all. And in the center, is a blonde haired person. You can't make much of the facial features but, literally everyone seems to be congratulating them only. Nobody even pays any attention to you.
You look around for any signs of recognition of the sacrifices the fatui have made. None. But, it's not the end, as you hear. Burial ceremony will be tomorrow, so, maybe there you can find some peace.
But the next news in the following evening shock you.
Captain... He...
The news make you fall on the floor. He sacrificed himself. You don't know many details. After all, Captain never talked about himself much. But if he did what he did, he must have had a great purpose for it.
The fatui, the ones serving Captain, are in disarray. They lost their leader. Some come back to Snezhnaya, while others refuse to believe and wander off to cope with the loss. You are the second group.
You wander around, visit the monument. You see his mask carved out and it makes your sacrifices somewhat bearable. Even so, you only see the number of Natlan warriors who have died. Nothing about the fatui soldiers.
But it doesn't end there.
Over the next few days, you notice the natlan tribals not being as warm to you as before. They look at you with distrust, scoff and whisper between one another and point fingers at you whenever you pass by. Children no longer smoke at you and the elderly pretend you don't exist when you walk by.
From one of your remaining Natlan friends you fought alongside with during the abyss invasion, you learn that Mavuika ordered to track any fatui inside her nation, due to dottore taking interest in the region. And because of that, many believe you to be his spy.
It's ridiculous! You risked your life! You lost your friends in this land! All to save it, and this is how you get treated?
You walk around and see that same blonde haired person, painted on the side of a rock. The supposed "hero of natlan". What a sick joke.
Picking up your weapon, you smash the rock his graffiti was painted on.
Your next stop - Nod Krai. If they believe you to be a dottore's spy then that's exactly what you will become!
