Messages no longer showing contact photo for notification

I recently reverted from the beta version of Google Messages to the standard version and now notifications are just showing a generic text bubble icon for text notifications instead of the contact photo. Previously the popup notification and AOD notification would show as the contact photo for whoever messaged, which was handy as a quick visual cue as to who texted.

Can anyone advise on how to restore this?

I'm on OneUI 6.1, Android 14, everything is on the latest update, etc.
