Another question about weight loss and metabolism
Background: recently diagnosed with hypo, starting on 50mcg of Synthroid a couple weeks ago.
TL;DR: do you guys use fasting to lose weight or is it better to eat meals during the day?
I have struggled with weight my whole life--I think I've had mild hypo for some time--and recently as my TSH has ballooned so has my weight. I am obviously super unhappy and trying to fix it, but my weight continues to slowly creep up.
I understand that hypo affects the metabolism. A few years ago, to manage my weight I would have to fast for days on end. I'd really be laying in bed feeling like a hungry little peasant child because I knew that was the only way I would not even lose weight, just not gain it, lol. I did this pretty much every week, not eating once or twice a week.
I've stopped that because I started lifting, and I need to eat for muscle gain, but my weight has continued to balloon. I'm so tired of it though and I've tried calorie tracking and blah blah but it doesn't work. I exercise about 4 + times a week by lifting and cycling. I've tried intermittent fasting but it doesn't make a difference, though I still often (most days) only eat dinner so I end up intermittent fasting. I've cut out all deserts and stuff, and I never eat packaged food like cereal or Oreos or whatever.
Some people recommend fasting to me. But others say I've destroyed my metabolism for going days (sometimes 5 + days at a time) without eating, an that I need to heal my metabolism. I am at such a loss about how to lose weight and I'm ready to do literally anything even if it's very drastic to at least stop weight gain. The only thing I can think of is to stop eating entirely again, but it gives me awful headaches and I can't sleep, and I have a job now. Back then I was in college and I could cope. It's so hard to focus when you haven't eaten in days. I can do it but it's hard. Forget lifting at that point. I don't want to do this unless it actually works .
I guess my question is, have you hypo people have success with fasting 50 - 100 hours straight per week, or with eating multiple small meals a day? Does fasting heal metabolism or damage it? How do you structure meals to boost and heal your metabolism? I'm at such a loss.
