Synod stance on Communion Frequency
As a formerly wandering sheep returning to the flock for two Sundays now, I have been really looking forward to Communion. My church, (I believe) has the practice of offering communion every 1st and 3rd Sunday so I naturally assumed after not having it last week, that it would be offered this week. Unfortunately, my first Sunday back fell on a 4th-Sunday during a month that also has a 5th Sunday. I haven’t attended church for over a year now so what is one more Sunday to wait for the sacrament.
But it brings me to my question, what is the synod’s position on the frequency of communion? Do all LCMS churches follow the 1st and 3rd Sunday? Is that a Church by Church, voted on position?
Growing up, I always looked forward to the non-communion weeks as it meant a shorter service. As I’ve returned to the Word daily, it’s been my longing for communion that has returned me to church again (I don’t deny there aren’t other benefits to going to church as well), so it really crushed my spirit when I walked in this morning and didn’t see the bread and wine laid out on the altar. As such I’m curious what the synod position on this is. And what potential arguments there are for not offering communion on every Sunday.
