Can I terminate my rental contract due to safety concerns? Scotland

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice on whether I have any legal grounds to terminate my rental contract early due to safety concerns.

I’m new to this city and did as much research as I could on the area’s safety before moving. Unfortunately, after only about four months of living here, my car was broken into, and £600-700 worth of my gym equipment was stolen.

After speaking to some neighbors, I’ve learned that theft is a common issue here. One told me their car was also broken into, and another mentioned that even within the building, someone had stolen from a neighbor. With all this information, I genuinely don’t feel safe living here anymore.

I rent through an agency and have informed them about the break-in, but I haven’t formally raised my concerns about safety or asked about ending my contract yet. Does anyone know if this situation could be considered a valid reason to terminate my lease early without penalties? I’m in Scotland if that helps.

Any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated!
