Super Mario Galaxy Controls

So, I just recently dusted off my old Nintendo w ii for nostalgia purposes and obviously, the first game I booted up with Super Mario Galaxy (I prefer SMG2 but I love both to death)

However, when I got to the first planet... Something felt off. Either, iIt's been so long since I've played this game or there's something I've missed or forgotten, but the controls feel very touchy but also janky.

Is this a general problem with SMG or am I just rusty? If this is a game problem, is there any sort of fix or workaround for this?
