Doing an REU vs. Continuing Research at Home Institution

I have been working in a research lab for the past year and have been very productive. The lab itself is well regarded and I know that my PI is very well respected in his field. My PI also seems to like me, and I have been working on a project which I should have the chance to get a publication for before grad school applications this year.

The main issue is that I wanted to do an REU this summer for a variety of reasons. I am honestly kinda burnt out on my current research and have realized I will want to switch fields when I go to grad school. All of my research experience has been in synthetic biology and I would really like to do physical chemistry or inorganic chemistry. But at the same time, I feel like I would be wasting a huge opportunity for a publication and a strong senior thesis if I left for the summer.
