We see Mark working on a refining folder labeled Cold Harbor. So the name could be a nod to Cold Spring Harbor, NY. It is the birthplace of the eugenics movement and human hereditary research from the 1910s-1930s. They were committed to "race betterment." This is, of course, the American eugenics research the Nazis became interested in.
So I think Lumon is interested in perfecting Gemma for some broader ideal or betterment of a human being. Notice in the upper left hand corner of the image is ITNO 25.00 (Build). This could mean iteration number 25 of a certain build of Gemma.
I think Mark and Gemma are part of a specific experiment that Cobel was especially interested in. Mark could be refining the best version of Gemma (made up of woe, dread, frolic, malice according to Kier philosophy) over and over again. Different models of Ms. Casey?
It appears that if the refiner knows the person they are refining they are much more adept at it. Perhaps Helly is refining an Eagan family member who died? Who would Irv and Dylan be refining? And we know our original refiners aren't the only Lumon refiners. We met 3 new ones. So there must be a lot of wide scale refining going on all across Lumon.
