Finished Oathbringer... meh.
3 months later update: I just read a bunch of (super popular) fantasy romance, and I realized I actually really prefer romance as a side plot and get annoyed when it distracts from the epic fantasy. So, yes. I love this book. I love Brandon Sanderson. And I can't wait to finish all the cosmere books.
__
Everything just felt subdued compared to the first two books. I was at least hoping for a spicy romance with Kaladin/Shallan, given all the hints through the book. Then, it ends with Shallan's wedding and just killed the vibe. Yes, I know Adolin is great and perfect. But Shallan/Adolin is just so bland. There's comfort there, sure. 🤷♀️ Would've been better if there wasn't any build up there. It's like when you're expecting a fudgy chocolate cake and end up with apple pie...good, not exciting (and yes I read for excitement, not to feel meh).
Does book 4 get better? I doubt Kaladin/Shallan get together without Adolin dying. But give me spoilers on this - I don't want to hype myself up and get disappointed again lol.
I would've also wanted Adolin with someone other than Shallan. I like him a lot, just not with her.
Better explained thoughts/comparison:
Kaladin/Shallan:
- Deep emotional connection: Both experience trauma and mental health struggles, forming a bond of understanding and empathy.
- Shared growth: Their interactions often lead to personal growth, challenging each other's perspectives and beliefs.
- Mutual respect: They respect each other’s abilities and strengths, fostering a relationship of equals.
- Passionate romantic chemistry: Their interactions often leave you wanting more—because it feels like they understand that the other is so deeply complex and it's also the first time we really see them open up (Kaladin more than he has with anyone else). The intimacy feels...intimate.
Shallan/Adolin:
- Complementary personalities: Adolin's charm and stability complement Shallan's wit and complexity.
- Stability and support: Adolin provides a stable, supportive environment that allows Shallan to explore her identities.
- Comfortable romantic Chemistry: Their interactions are often lighthearted and typical of a young romance
