101 vs 5 in winter?

Hello! I’m moving up to Portland at the end of February from SoCal. I was wondering if it’s a lunatic idea to just take the 101 up and avoid the pass and the 5 completely since it’ll be winter? Or is it normally not that bad? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!
