Is it harder to be gay in Asian countries?

I've been noticing that in most BLs that I read, the characters are generally very afraid of homophobia for being gay. And not that there isn't prejudice where I live, but there are many people who are LGBT and have openly been in romantic relationships since high school.

However, I don't remember a story I've read in which the characters make it official to their friends, family or society that they are together. Normally it always shows them sharing their lives, moving in together. But so, why isn't there a relationship? There's no dating proposal, no marriage, nothing like that.

Not that it's an official rule, but where I live there are many openly homosexual couples dating, getting married and everything else. This made me think, is it a huge taboo to be homosexual in Asian countries? Can people lose their jobs because of this?

Edit: Guys, when I talk about "coming out" I'm talking about the relationship, not sexuality. Not about someone coming in and announcing that they're gay, but about being able to introduce your boyfriend as a boyfriend and not as a friend. No heterosexual announces that they are heterosexual. However, many announce that they are in a relationship, publicly assuming this relationship. It was in this sense that I wanted to speak.
