ELI5: What's the difference between a handycam, camcorder, hi8 & digital camera?

I know a VHS uses those big black tape things, I'm pretty sure a VCR is the thing that plays back those tapes, like a dvd player, but older? What really confuses me are the handycams, camcorder or hi8 things, are they all just different names for the same thing?
