Writing about PTSD related to farming corn/vegetables
I know the title is weird and very specific, but it is for a reason. I write fanfiction as a hobby, and one character in a web-series I like has a fear of corn because "it reminds him of the farm," according to the creator of the series.
Some people write about it being related to child abuse, but I thought it would be interesting to take it in a different direction: as a teenager, the character worked on a farm, and it was stressful enough to cause C-PTSD(PTSD caused by prolonged trauma/stress). I don't think that's completely unrealistic given the horror stories I see about how stressful farming is, and it would also shed light on the stressful nature of the farming industry, which I think is often overlooked and disregarded by most people.
Now here's the issue: I have no knowledge on how farming works. I don't know the process of farming vegetables or how difficult that is. I grew up in suburbia and still live there, and the only firsthand knowledge I have of the Great Outdoors™ is through my experiences in Scouting, which is a lot, but nothing related to farming.
So, that leads me to my questions:
- How stressful is vegetable farming?
- Where can I look to find the process by which vegetables are farmed? Specifics, like what a farmhand would have to do, labor intensity, and other stuff like that, would be appreciated.
