First time damage from power surge?

Last week I saw a spark come from my subwoofer (RSL 10S MK2) and it shut off. I called RSL customer support and they were lovely. We determined that the amp and fuses were blown but the driver was unharmed. Not once have I ever had any electronics damaged by a power surge. The subwoofer was literally my only home theater component that wasn't plugged into a protected power bar. At 1020 peak watts I figured I didn't want it sharing power with multiple devices on the same outlet, so I have it it's own.

The RSL guy said this was somewhat common. I've not heard much about subwoofers getting damaged by power surges. Nothing else in my home was damaged. My PC and Vitamix blender are both plugged directly into their own receptacles and both are fine.

Is this a somehow a subwoofer specific thing?

I did buy 2 protected power bars but I'm still learning about the various ratings and apparently power surge damage to surge protectors is cumulative so this is a work in progress.
