How can i help this plant?

Foster plant from a coworker who ended up refusing to take it back. Can I make something out of it? I'd like to cut it all the way to the base - can I expect it to resprout? I need to repot it but not if it's going to respond with 7 feet of height and two leaves at the very top haha.

I'll be honest - I don't keep purely decorative houseplants any more and this one especially feels like an extra unwanted obligation. On the other hand, I admire its resiliency, so I want to give it a chance if i can.
