I bought an inexpensive tuxedo. I think I made a mistake.
I have been on a weight loss journey for the last 8 months, having lost approximately 30-40 lbs (~14-18 kilos). I consider myself to be about halfway through the journey and hope to lose about the same amount of weight over the next year. Given my situation, I did not want to spend top dollar for something that would potentially no longer fit by this time next year. I also did not want to rent (I have an odd body shape and have never looked good in a rental). I set a budget of less than $400. I searched high and low and could not find anything that wasn’t almost all polyester in that price range. I tried on a few Macys tuxedos but everything was overpriced and didn’t have the classic tuxedo details. So I decided to buy a secondhand tuxedo on eBay. I settled on a Marks and Spencer with a label indicating “Italian fabric, 100% pure wool, made in Morocco.” It came out to ~$100 which believed to be a great deal. Today I took it to get tailored and it needs a lot of work. I asked the if I still got decent deal and he pretty much told me the fabric is “horrible quality” which surprised me given the label and decent reviews of M&S suits. The work costs $250 (jacket sleeve taper, hemming, fitting; letting out pants, pant sleeve tapering, hemming). I’m looking at around $350 all-in. I thought I did ok but the tailor definitely took the wind out of my sails with his comments. If anyone here is familiar with Marks & Spencer and tailoring, I’d be curious to know what your thoughts are on my purchase? Seems like this was a case of losing dollars by pinching pennies Thanks in advance.
