Why aren't the Yankees the richest team in America anymore?

Growing up as a non-American, the Yankees were like synonymous with America. Like Jay-Z said, he made the Yankee hat synonymous with America. And we all knew the Yankees were rich as hell.

Now I see this article yesterday of the Yankees claiming they can't compete with Los Angeles financially:

And I've seen the Dallas Cowboys are worth more than the Yankees today in Forbes.

What happened to the behemoth that is the New York Yankees?
