Best "Starter/Practice" Parrot?

Hey! I foster a lot of exotic animals and have also adopted quite a few. I'm mostly experienced with reptiles and amphibians but the rescue I work with started getting more intakes of other species including birds.

Animals are pretty much my life lol. I work from home so I can have more time to spend with my various pets and fosters and gladly spend a lot of my time caring and advocating for them. My partner and I have no children. I have a lot of time to dedicate to my animals and am passionate about them. I'm willing to spend whatever to keep the animals I care for happy and healthy (no kids and duel income means we have a large pet budget lol).

For a long time I've loved parrots especially the larger species like macaws and cockatoos, but I don't actually have much personal experience with them. I am aware of how challenging these birds can be and that they are not ideal pets for most people.

I've been thinking a lot about adopting if/when one comes into the rescue and believe I could offer a good home.

However a bit of a weird? question.... Is there a species of smaller parrot that would be a good "practice" parrot before jumping into larger species? I feel bad wording it that way. The smaller bird would be very much loved and cared for. But I'm wondering if I should start with a smaller bird to get more experience under my belt so to speak.

All of this being somewhat hypothetical because I'd only adopt birds, but species to maybe keep my eye out for in case they come into rescue? I've also been talking to our resident "crazy bird lady" and am going to start volunteering more with any birds we get in at the rescue.

If you keep one of the larger/more challenging species did you start out with other species first or just jump in head first?

Sorry for writing a novel 😆 Please feel free to ask any questions that might help you help me select a good "starter" bird.
