Thinking about getting a skateboard

So, I've been thinking about getting a skateboard for mobility. I live in a little village pretty much, and the city is like 45 minutes away if i walk, so i wanna get a skateboard, so i go to it and from it. I dont want a bike cause i dont wanna worry about it being stolen. I wanna get a skateboard cause i can just pick it up and carry in a store with me or just leave at my school locker. But the side walks are pretty gravelly here, so idk if it's good for a skate cause i can fall. What do yall think is a skateboard a decent way of getting around easier?
