Is there a proper place to appreciate the Uhura Character?
I grew up in the South in the 60s, and the Uhura character was life-changing. She was beautiful, talented, and a Bridge OFFICER. Her rank as a bridge officer is overlooked these days because people don't really comprehend the built-in disadvantages that Black people faced (particularly dark skinned Black people) in those days. This was a remarkable character who was portrayed brilliantly by Nichelle Nichols. She was my first schoolboy crush, I have to admit.
Where is the appropriate place to appreciate and give our respects to this remarkable character who meant so much to so many people? I learned much later that MLK convinced her to stay on the show. Regardless of that, she was the personification of dignity and beauty for a country that badly needed a heroine like her.
So where shall we respect her? Ideas?
