Why do airsoft players wear all of that gear? Is it just roleplay?

I see some players show up with a sweatshirt and jeans. Others I see show up in near full OCPs with carriers and ballistic helmets. Are the carriers and helmets even real? They gotta be fake right? No way someone would pay for plates when they are getting shot at by BBs
