Pls explain what he meant by "mercy kill"

We used to play games together so he likes to make references to games. In video games, a "mercy kill" can refer to a situation where a player ends the life of another character; someone who’s most likely a defeated enemy, to relieve them from more suffering or because their situation is hopeless. He knew that I wouldn’t stop trying to keep at least our friendship going. So he just went silent and cut me off. I mean I knew we weren’t good romantically and he also had no friends so I wanted to keep that part alive. He basically said he resented me for that. He told me he went to therapy since he was going through a tough time that year with some family stuff. He really reflected on our connection and he just didn’t want any kindness at all. I hope that made some sense!

Anyone that says they “don’t deserve you” is someone to run away from. Every time I have heard someone say that to me it seems they go out of their way to try to knock me down a few pegs by doing something really cruel like ghosting. People that feel unworthy of you will always try to hurt you as they either consciously or subconsciously blame you for their feelings of unworthiness.
