More than just the value, some of this stuff isn't going to be worth anything in terms of money, like that teenaged scrapbook, and others very little. It has to include the emotional aspect, compensation for the loss of sentimental items and the harm that has caused to OP. There may be something they can do legally, as well, though they'd need advise from an actual lawyer on that. This may constitute theft, and I wonder how the ex-wife got access given it was in a safety deposit box that OPs dad apparently guarded fairly well, based on the comments made.

My dad's still trying to figure that out. He never actually gave her access to the box so he's been questioning her and looking into how it happened. On top of all that he feels so guilty.

Hopefully he finds out. If he never gave her access, this should definitely constitute theft. It might help to know where the box was located. I mean, she shouldn't have been able to get access if it was held at a bank, for instance, as that should require your dad to be there just for access, and only your dad would be able to remove anything. Banks should have a record of all access granted, though, and may be able to tell if the ex-wife was granted access to the area or something. If the box was held somewhere else, I'm not sure.

I had to reassure him I don't blame him for what happened. He said he knows but he does and he thinks mom would too. Although my aunt said mom would understand too. Just my dad always wanted to do the best by me and he feels like he failed in that and failed to live up to the love and trust mom had in him when it came to his ability to be a good dad and protect me.
